Lightning struck last year on Red Bull Spielberg Ring (Austria). Lightning flashed, not from the sky, but from the contact between the two championship leaders, Lando Norris et Max Verstappen, whose battle for victory ended in a collision that had been felt for several laps. The Briton stopped his race following this duel, from which Max Verstappen emerged unharmed... or almost. Forced to pit to change a flat tire, the Dutchman took fifth place, leaving the victory to a George Russell who was almost surprised to find himself so well off.
One year later, will lightning strike again between the Styrian mountains? To find out, we'll have to watch the track more than the sky, because the sky promises to be relatively calm. Drivers and teams will endure the traditional Austrian rain on Thursday during the media day, but from Friday onwards the weather will be slightly more favorable. Grey skies are expected, with a possibility of light rain in the afternoon: just in time to spice up Free Practice 2 and especially qualifying. Formula 2 ? You will also have to be wary of wind gusts that could reach 45 km/h and trap some careless drivers.
On Saturday, however, the sun will be present throughout the day according to Météo France forecasts: no rain on the schedule for the qualifications. Formula 1, which should take place in mild conditions and under beautiful sunshine despite a cloudy sky (26°C expected at the maximum). Sunday, the day will be even more beautiful with 29°C expected at the maximum in Styria: enough to favor the single-seaters which manage the heat well and to harm those which, like Mercedes, prefer colder weather.
