Strongman of the command bridge Williams, James Vowles also does not hesitate to go to the other side to become a pilot for a weekend or a special event. Recently, we had the opportunity to see him compete in the Asian Le Mans Series at the wheel of a McLaren 720S GT3 from the Garage 59 team. Last July, he even had the luxury of representing Sir Frank's team at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in an FW08.

« It's a dream come true, he confided on the F1 website about this last experience. I have had the privilege of going to Goodwood several times before and it is an incredible event. Having the opportunity to not only drive on the hill, but to do it representing Williams Racing, was really… When I was offered it, it took me a second to say yes! »

James Vowles ready to challenge his peers

In the paddock, the former Mercedes is nevertheless not the only main team to combine the two passions. Indeed, some of his counterparts, like his ex-boss of L'Étoile Toto wolff, Christian Horner of Red Bull or McLaren's Zak Brown are also used to donning helmets and overalls from time to time, reminiscing about their younger years when they aspired to a career as a driver before turning to management.

A common passion between them which gave an idea to the official website of the F1 : that of creating a championship between team directors. “ Deal me in, answers James Vowles without hesitation. That would be fascinating. As you can imagine, Toto and I had a few opportunities to ride together on the track. We had a lot of fun (…)

With the distinctions that Toto, Christian and Zak were able to have... We would have a lot of fun. I think I would do well. But what will happen is carnage. We should expect that these cars will not come back with their four wheels. If you think F1 is very competitive, then imagine our race. » We just want to see!
