At a time when he is enjoying his vacation, Lando Norris must necessarily think about the last rounds of this first part of the season. Since his return to the Old Continent and the sequence of 5 Grands Prix in 6 weeks, the Englishman has never seemed so strong at the wheel of an MCL38 which is performing at the same level as his rival's RB20 Max Verstappen, or even above recently.
But now, at the end of this series of Grands Prix the taste must be somewhat bitter in the mouth of the native of Bristol. Because if he took second place in the championship at Charles Leclerc, he especially saw his Dutch counterpart widen the gap in the lead weekend after weekend. However, there was no shortage of opportunities. On the contrary, it is the pilot McLaren who showed himself feverish in the decisive moments.
There were two pole positions (Spain and Hungary) that he failed to convert. Worse, he didn't even come out of the first corner in the lead each time. In Great Britain, a missed save cost him all his chances of victory at home. Finally, in Belgium before the break, he appeared delicate in qualifying before missing out in the first corner losing a few positions which conditioned the rest of the Grand Prix. And apart from Hungary, Max Verstappen always finished ahead of him, widening the gap a little further with 78 points behind now.
« I have to work on myself and on certain points, he confided in an exchange with Sky Sports F1 on the Woking side. I feel like I have the [Good] car and that I have what I need around me. But I probably made a few too many mistakes in the last month. I lost opportunities. I would like to fix it."
Among the points he seeks to perfect, Lando Norris has one in particular in mind: “ Departures, he admits. Knowing how to make a decision... It's small things that have had big, big consequences. In Formula 1, it often happens that a small difference has big consequences because it is very tight. But I know it and I also know that I have to work on these points and stay focused. So that’s what this summer break will be for me – both to unplug and to review a lot of points and make sure that I come back stronger. » See you in Zandvoort (August 23-25) in a few days!
