As long, passionate and dramatic as The Young and the Restless, the saga between Andretti Global and the Formula 1 continues to be supplied with new episodes. Last Wednesday, the American structure announced the opening of a new infrastructure at Silverstone with the aim of obtaining a place on the grid, qualifying this as “the next step in our preparations to compete in the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. »
On Thursday, it was Mario Andretti's turn to speak about the eponymous team's bid to enter Formula 1. The 1978 world champion, father of team director Michael Andretti, said that the team of his son was not discouraged by the announcement of Formula One Management, made last January, to refuse Andretti's entry into F1.
“We have never stopped working since the very beginning. We already have a car, a blower, etc. The current goal is to be on the starting grid in 2026, he specified in an interview with Sports Illustrated. There are so many key elements to be defined once we have full agreement. We need to have a definitive 'yes' to hire the staff and highly experienced people who want to join us. Once we get that 'OK', we don't start from scratch. We are already on the right track. »
Andretti hopes « positive results » with the FOM
Mario Andretti also declared that discussions between Andretti Global, the FIA and the FOM had not stopped despite the refusal, while the American team is still seeking to gain its place and convince the FOM to join the grid from 2026. “We are working on it every day, regardless of what has been presented to the press so far. I think we have a valid approach. The FIA has put us to the test so that we can tick all the boxes and we still need the blessing of the FOM, but we have a key meeting coming up and I hope we get some positive results. »
As a reminder, if the FOM had refused the integration of Andretti in 2026, it had however indicated that the door remained open for the arrival of the Andretti-Cadillac tandem in the paddock by 2028. “We would view a 2028 championship bid with a General Motors powertrain differently, either as a GM factory team or a GM customer team” Formula 1 then reported.

Following the problems of Williams Racing and the poor performances ofAlpine with rumors of sale (admittedly denied by Renault... but there is never smoke without fire!), the FOM senses that it could well lose 2 teams in the more or less near future, where this upcoming meeting with Andretti Global for an entry in 2026?
