Far from the success encountered in Monaco, Scuderia Ferrari experienced a terrible weekend in Canada, punctuated by the retirement of its two drivers. A zero point which resonates as a harsh return to reality.

The world of Formula 1 evolves quickly, very quickly. Just two weeks ago, Ferrari was celebrating following the victory of Charles Leclerc and the double podium in Monaco. On Sunday, members of the Team looked like they were having bad days at the end of a terrible weekend for the Italian team: first eliminated in Q2 the day before, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz did not see the arrival of the Canadian Grand Prix.

The first suffered an engine problem in the first laps and ended up retiring after trying too daring a strategy. The second, handicapped by aerodynamic damage, made a mistake and crashed Alexander albon, putting an end to his race and that of the Thai. In the Italian clan, obviously, we are a little groggy following this double abandonment and this lack of performance in Montreal.

“The reasons are multiple for Charles [Leclerc]: we already lost engine control, we lost 80 kW (or 108 horsepower) for ten laps. We had to stop for thirty seconds, cut off the engine, restart it... the race was lost. Carlos [Sainz] had a contact where he damaged his front wing, the flat bottom, and he ended up coming out. That's a lot for just one weekend. observed Frédéric Vasseur at the microphone of Canal+. But ultimately, it might be better to put everything on one weekend and have a little cleaner weekend afterwards. It's a bit hard, we're a bit shocked, we have to wake up for the next one. »

“The positive side is that Charles' pace, despite his motor problem, was pretty good, added the boss of the Scuderia, trying to find a little optimism in this dark weekend. He held the peloton well with 80 kW less. It's pretty good in terms of performance, but not scoring any points on a weekend like that is a bit tough. »

A hard blow for Ferrari in the championship

Far from the rejoicings and celebrations of Monaco, Ferrari will have its work cut out for it in the days to come to dissect the reasons for the trouble that has affected the Scuderia in Canada.

“The most important thing is to take the problems one after the other, to know what happened and to see what we can do on our side, declared Frédéric Vasseur. On the engine part [of Leclerc], we have to understand where the failure comes from. Afterwards, for Charles, in terms of the race, I don't think he has much to reproach himself for. We took some more than daring bets, but given where we were (…) we had to do it. For Carlos, it's a little more to analyze because the rhythm wasn't magical. We need to see if it was blocked by traffic. Afterwards, when we made contact, we lost around 20 aero points, that is to say seven or eight tenths, it was also folded. »

With this zero point, the Italian team sees McLaren get closer to 40 points in the Manufacturers' championship. Above all, with the victory of Max Verstappen, the emerging hope of a fight for the Drivers' title has already taken a hit for Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque, still second, is now relegated to 56 points behind the Dutchman…

0 points for the Scuderia but only one Red Bull at the finish, it is still within the realm of play for the Manufacturers' title but it is worth noting that such a weekend will not be repeated between now and the end of the season
