Sergio Pérez once again experienced a particularly complicated Grand Prix in Canada, after the poor performances at Imola and Monaco. On the 52nd lap of the race, on the Montreal circuit, the Mexican driver made a mistake alone in turn 6 and crashed the rear of his car into the tecpro. His rear wing fell to shreds and his suspension was damaged, but he left to head towards his pit box.

According to the sports commissioners, “The team confirmed at the hearing that the driver was advised to bring the car back to the pits as they were trying to avoid a safety car situation.” Pérez therefore received a 3 place penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix and Red Bull had to pay a fine of 25 euros.

A penalty that Helmut Marko, Red Bull advisor, does not understand. According to the Austrian, the sanction is too severe since the team did not bring in Sergio Pérez to avoid a safety car but to try to repair the car.

“The mirrors of Perez were dirty and he couldn't see what the back looked like, Helmut Marko told German media Speedweek . We could see from the data that the suspension was in good condition, so of course we are trying to get the car back and ideally be able to fight for points again. »

Seeing damaged cars returning to the pits is not something extremely rare. Helmut Marko pointed out that very few penalties are given in this type of case. " I remember that Lewis Hamilton finished once on three wheels at Silverstone and won. It's strange, there was no penalty at that time. »

Ah the ineffable Doktor Helmooout, too severe a sanction because the team did not bring in TexMex to avoid the Safety Car but to try to repair the car! Who is he kidding? Christian Horner admitted that Red Bull had brought him back to avoid the SC which could have handicapped Max Verstappen, hence the penalty imposed! Obviously, there is still some disagreement between Marko and Horner...
