We knew that his fate was already sealed for 2025, with the signing of Carlos Sainz. His dismissal during the season, just a few days after the resumption of Formula 1, was also expected. Logan sargeant will not compete at the end of the 2024 championship with the British team, and finds himself without a steering wheel overnight.
The Floridian, who will have had time to compete in 36 Grands Prix in 18 months, for only one point scored, sees his career in F1 end abruptly. The violent crash during Free Practice 3 at Zandvoort was the final straw for James Vowles and his team, who decided to start Franco Colapinto for the remaining nine Grands Prix.
The question now is what will happen to Logan Sargeant in the future? It's difficult to see the American returning to Formula 1 one day, despite his nationality which could prove interesting for the US market. This time, it won't be enough. Unfortunately for the now ex-pilot Williams, the exit doors are very limited for the end of the 2024 season, if not non-existent. He should logically focus on 2025 to find a full-time seat… or not.
IndyCar, the logical path for Logan Sargeant?
At present, the best solution which appears to be the most obvious is a return to the country, in IndyCar. Logan Sargeant, despite his history in Formula 1, has certain qualities: young (23 years old), experienced at the highest level and with a CV in car interesting (3rd of Formula 3 in 2020, 4th in Formula 2 in 2022). Others have had a spot in the American championship for less than that! It could also be that Logan Sargeant finds himself behind the wheel of an Indycar with a team that will make its debut next year: PREMA.
In Formula 3, when he drove for the Italian team led by René Rosin, he performed well by taking three pole positions, more than his teammate. Oscar piastri, even if poor results at the end of the year had undoubtedly cost him the title. The Fort Lauderdale native matches the profile sought by PREMA and his past relationships could speak in his favor. Other teams also have seats available for next year: we are thinking in particular of Dale Coyne Racing or Juncos Hollinger Racing, but these are darker tracks.
Apart from this emergency route, it is currently difficult to predict the next adventures of Logan Sargeant in motorsport, he who always refused to comment on his future when he was still a starter at Williams. Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, he notably left the door open for a reserve pilot role within the British team, but his hasty dismissal could well change his mind.
Last June, he briefly spoke about his future, confiding that he was looking at opportunities everywhere else. “For my part, I am thinking about all the options at the moment, in Formula 1, but also in the other disciplines”, he said before the Austrian Grand Prix. There is no doubt that, despite his complicated experience in the premier category, Logan Sargeant will remain a driver scrutinized and invited by several teams outside Formula 1.
