Started with the medium rubbers, Daniel Ricciardo was however one of the first drivers to go through the pit lane, at the end of the seventh lap of the race. A strategic move that quickly backfired. The Australian did not really move up the hierarchy during the second stint, and it was only after his second passage through the pit lane that he was able to regain some positions. Not enough, however, to get back into the points, and he even had to lose against Lance stroll for 11e place in the last laps.
From his first stop, Ricciardo knew that the race would become extremely complicated for him: “When you're called to the pits in this case, you don't want to go in, you know it's not the right thing to do. But they called me to the pits late, and there was no time to think about it, to ask questions. But as soon as I stopped, I said to myself that those in softs had just stopped, we were in mediums, it was the opportunity to use this fresh air, and our advantage in pace. I then came out in traffic, in a DRS train, and we said “what’s the point?” "It was one of the worst Grands Prix of my career for me, just a long and frustrating race, which really made me angry", he explained to the official website of the F1.
“Going in circles” for 1h30
The eight-time Grand Prix winner believes that it was his team that cost him a potentially good result, his teammate Yuki tsunoda having crossed the checkered flag in ninth place, bringing two points into his bag. The driver at No. 3 even indicates that he cannot really consider that he was racing this Sunday.
“I feel like we shot ourselves in the foot very early on, and that I was expected to be able to keep behind me a car that was catching me by a second per lap, with tires Fresher. What can I do about it? We really made it difficult for ourselves, when we could have stayed on the track, lined up the laps, and done what we did all weekend, remained calm. We didn't really race this Sunday, we just went in circles. »
