In the long history of Formula 1Some pilots tasted success quickly, while others had to be patient. This was the case for Lando NorrisHaving arrived in Formula 1 at the dawn of the 2019 season, the wait may have seemed endless for the Briton for a time.

His first victory, the pilot McLaren He signed it at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, 110 Grands Prix after his debut. For his first world title, the number 4 – and future number 1 – had to wait another season and a half. At the 2025 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the day of his coronation, he thus entered the ranking of drivers who have won a title after the longest wait in their career.

Having become world champion after 152 races, Lando Norris is the fourth driver to have won a world title later in his career. Ahead of him, only Jenson Button (159), Nigel Mansell (176), and Nico Rosberg (206) have contested more races before achieving the coveted prize for every Formula 1 driver.

In terms of seasons, Lando Norris is the seventh driver with the most experience before winning a title. He competed in seven seasons in total. The top three in this ranking are the same drivers, but in a different order. Nigel Mansell competed in a total of thirteen seasons before his sole championship win in 1992. Behind him, Nico Rosberg participated in eleven Formula 1 seasons before winning the title in 2016, while Jenson Button competed for ten years before finally securing the coveted championship in 2009.

The best statistic that puts them "on equal footing" is the number of seasons it takes to win the title, rather than the number of Grand Prix races: it's "easier" to win a title in a season with fewer Grand Prix, as the advantage goes to those who start strong. By that logic, Piastri might have won the title this year.

Okay, Mansell, but in 1992 he had 16 GPs

This stat isn't comparable! Don't forget that Norris races 24 GPs per season, Lewis, for example, in his first season it was 18 GPs per season, or Vettel in 2010 it was 19 GPs, so that makes a difference.

After 7 seasons, like Verstappen, and only 11 more Grand Prix... According to your figures! Norris's performance isn't so bad then... We certainly didn't bring up these statistics in 2021 when the Dutchman won his first title, although his first title was very controversial compared to the Englishman's!
