After a particularly difficult Friday, Esteban Ocon He was counting on capitalizing on the rain that fell during qualifying in Las Vegas. The Norman driver ultimately qualified in thirteenth position, ahead of his teammate Oliver Bearman. This did little to lessen the disappointment of the number 31 driver, who felt he could have done better.
"We didn't do our best, it's very disappointing because we had much more pace than that."he commented to F1TV. “I had to slow down on one of my Q2 laps and when I tried to push again, I had lost tire temperature and locked the wheels in the first corner. On the last two attempts, I didn't improve my time; I set my benchmark time earlier, and the track had improved a lot in the meantime.”
After several complicated Grands Prix, where the Frenchman struggled to contain Bearman's impressive pace, getting the better of his teammate and showing disappointment at being "only in Q2" still offers some positives to take away before Sunday's Grand Prix (start at 5 a.m. French time).
“We really had the pace to get into Q3, so it’s very disappointing, but it’s also positive because the conditions were very tricky and we showed that we’re still competitive when you have to put in the laps and optimize your package. I’ve been struggling lately, but it’s still a good session. The race will be very different. We’ll have to see what happens with the graining. Even though we didn’t get the most out of what we have, we look competitive and that’s the positive thing from today.”
