F1 – Brazilian GP
Live qualifying commentary

13h18 – Q3: 🏁 This is the end of this live commentary of the qualifications, thank you for joining us and see you in just a few hours, at 16:30 p.m., for the Grand Prix! And yes already! See you later!

13h12 – Q3: 🏁 POLE POSITION FOR NORRIS WHO EVEN IMPROVED ON HIS LAST LAP! 1'23“405 for the Englishman who takes an 8th pole in his career. But be careful because he will not be protected by Piastres, only 8th! Behind him, Norris finds Russell and an incredible trio led by tsunoda before Or with and Lawson! What a session all the same, full of twists and turns and which lasted almost 2 hours! This promises to be a good time for the Grand Prix at 16:30 p.m. while Verstappen must go up and that others can hope to achieve very good results!

13h08 – Q3: 🟢 The light turns green again with 3'31 on the clock. Will there be another red flag? Will we go to the end of Q3 without another interruption? Answer in a few moments

13h05 – Q3: 🔴 The resumption is scheduled for 13:08 p.m.

13h04 – Q3: 🔴 The condition of the carAlbon after his accident:

13h03 – Q3: 🔴 With this fifth red flag, the Imola 2022 qualifying record is equaled

13h02 – Q3: 🔴 The ranking has not changed:

12h58 – Q3: 🔴 And 5! Another red flag caused this time by Albon going off at the first braking! Big blow for the Briton who pulverized his Williams. He went slightly off course and lost control under braking, ending his race against the wall on the outside of the first corner. It's hard to imagine him starting in less than 4 hours. He was 2nd at that point.

12h54 – Q3: 🟢 Here we go again! 6'51 on the clock and only 8 drivers left. Norris leads the way but the times should improve further

12h52 – Q3: 🔴 The session will resume at 12:54 p.m.

12h48 – Q3: Verstappen’s reaction to Canal+ after his elimination in Q2, criticising in particular the lack of reaction from race management.

“It’s incredible how long it takes to wave the red flags. A driver goes out, it’s obvious that the car is broken and we wait several seconds before bringing out the red flag. In the meantime, it’s allowed drivers in front of us to set a time. It’s incredible. Of course we have to take our foot off the gas straight away, but the red flag has to be waved instantly. It’s incredible!”

12h42 – Q3: 🔴 New red flag! A fourth in these qualifications. It's Alonso who made a mistake this time, in turn 11. A hard blow for Ocon who had just set the best time in the first sector. There are 6'59 left in this Q3 and Norris is in the lead with a time of 1'24"158

12h41 – Q3: Norris is provisionally fastest in 1'25"631 with 0"054 ahead of Russell

12h37 – Q3: 🟢 Here we go for Q3 in Brazil! 12 minutes on the clock and still a little rain!

12h32 – Q2: At the microphone of Canal+, Sainz indicated that the team will now recover the car and work on it in the hope of repairing it in time. The time trial is on!

12h25 – Q2: 🔴 New red flag and Verstappen trapped! Twelfth at the time of the neutralizations, the Dutchman will not be able to improve because there is less than a minute left on the clock. Q2 will not restart. The red flag was caused by Stroll, who made a mistake at the exit of turn 3. A tough blow for Verstappen who will also start 17th due to his 5-place penalty! Bottas, Perez, Sainz and gasly are the others eliminated. Norris has the opportunity to make a big impact in the championship in the event of a strong performance in Q3 while his rival will start at the back of the grid

12h20 – Q2: 🟢 The action resumes at Interlagos. 5'51 on the clock. Norris, Gasly, Albon, Tsunoda and Ocon are provisionally eliminated. Things could get busy on the track!

12h17 – Q2: 🔴 With his accident, the question arises as to whether Sainz will be able to participate in the Grand Prix. As a reminder, it is Sunday and the start is scheduled for 16:30 p.m., a little over 4 hours. Given the damage, it could come down to the wire

12h14 – Q2: 🔴 Here is the ranking while this Q2 is neutralized with 5'51 still on the clock:

12h12 – Q2: 🔴 Second red flag! Again in Senna's S. This time it was Sainz who made a mistake at the entrance to turn 2. Like Colapinto a few minutes ago, the Spaniard lost control of the rear of his car and also ended his race in the wall, this time with much more damage, particularly to the rear axle.

12h11 – Q2: Here is the provisional ranking 7 minutes from the end while everyone has put on intermediate shoes:

12h09 – Q2: 1'27“141 for Piastri who takes the lead with 0“630 ahead of Verstappen. The intermediate rubber works!

12h08 – Q2: With his intermediaries, Piastri begins to roll well. At McLaren, Norris was immediately called back to put them on. Everyone follows!

12h07 – Q2: The first times are coming in and it's already going faster than in Q1. Perez provisionally takes the lead in 1'28"158 with a 0"549 lead over Alonso.

12h04 – Q2: Piastri doesn't waste any time. The Aussie is already going out in intermediates! Be careful not to get trapped. His exit turn will be crucial

12h03 – Q2: 🟢 The 15 qualifiers are back on track! The intensity of the rain has clearly decreased and it would not be surprising to see some try their luck with the intermediates

11h57 – Q1: 🏁 It just goes through for Norris, 15th and last qualified for Q2! It doesn’t go through for Hamilton, who came out in Q1. The Englishman suffered a lot with his Mercedes, often sliding. He is accompanied by Bearman, Colapinto, Hulkenberg et Zhou. Up front, Verstappen set the fastest time with more than half a second ahead of Albon and Russell. Great performance from Ocon with 4th place

11h54 – Q1: Up front, Tsunoda still remains in the lead while Russell reassures himself by moving up to 2nd. Leclerc, Ocon and Perez follow. Verstappen and Norris are 12th and 14th respectively.

11h53 – Q1: With three minutes to go, Bottas, Lawson, Bearman, Zhou and Russell are provisionally eliminated

11h51 – Q1: Already improvements in the first laps of the race. Piastri moves up to 5th, just under a second behind Tsunoda. This is unlikely to stop with just under 5 minutes left on the clock.

11h47 – Q1: 🟢 The clock is running again. There are 8'50 left in this Q1, still being played in the rain which could quickly stop according to the weather radars

11h45 – Q1: 🔴 The session is scheduled to resume at 11:47 a.m.

11h40 – Q1: 🔴 Red flag! Colapinto is immobilized at the exit of turn 3. The Argentinian lost control of the rear of his Williams and was unable to avoid contact with the wall. He was provisionally 9th

11h39 – Q1: Tsunoda improves and takes the provisional lead in 1'29“172 with 0“744 ahead of Ocon. Conditions are improving with some drivers starting to think about intermediates

11h37 – Q1: Bottas is the first to try the intermediates. The lap started badly for the Finn who missed at turn 4. The choice does not seem to be the wisest given the water on the track at the moment.

11h35 – Q1: Several drivers get caught out in turn 13 with straight-ons.

11h34 – Q1: The first times are coming in. Ocon is currently leading with a lap of 1'30"096 ahead of Alonso, Verstappen, Sainz and Norris.

11h32 – Q1: 🟡 Already a first yellow flag, in the second and third sectors. Lawson was at a standstill but he got going again. Back to normal

11h30 – Q1: 🢢 Here we go! The light at the end of the pit lane has turned green, the drivers rush onto the track with Albon leading the pack

11h29Good news, the start will be at 11:30 a.m.!

11h26 – In the pit lane, all the drivers prepare and gradually get into their car. In principle, the start of the qualifications will be given on time (11:30 a.m.)

11h22 – 🌧️ Last night, some were ready to take to the track despite the rain, like Hamilton, who was somewhat teasing with Domenicali, president of F1.

Postponed Qualifying: Hamilton's Little Jab at Domenicali

11h20 – 🌧️ As a reminder, the start of the Grand Prix has also been brought forward. New time: 16:30 p.m. (French time)

11h17 – 🌧️ First piece of information and not the least: it's still raining at Interlagos! It's certainly less intense but the rain is still there while the clock shows 7:17 on site. The Safety Car was able to run in any case. Now we'll see what decision the stewards will make, but a postponement of the start of the session cannot be ruled out.

11h15 – 👋 Hello everyone and welcome once again to the live commentary of the Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying, hoping that the program goes smoothly this time! The start is scheduled for 11:30

20h50 – 👋 Even though there was no qualifying session (😥), we still thank you for following us tonight! And see you tomorrow for, hopefully, the qualifying of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the schedule of which has yet to be determined. Have a good evening!

20h46 – 🚨 It's now official: qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix will not take place today! Despite the multiple postponements, the weather has not improved and the stewards are forced to postpone the session, since visibility will become worse and worse with the sunset. It remains to be seen whether a session can be organized tomorrow morning: in any case, that is what the FIA is hoping!

20h38 – 🔎 Deprived of a steering wheel for 2025 despite an extremely promising start at Williams, Franco Colapinto is desperately looking for a place to fall for next year. And it would seem that the hypothesis of seeing him become Max Verstappen's next teammate is no longer so far-fetched... with potential consequences for Isack Hadjar.

20h31 – 🚨 New delay, again: the FIA announces a start of Q1 expected at 17:00 local time, or 21:00 French time. This could be the last delay in qualifying before a definitive postponement to Sunday morning.

20h24 – 🇦🇷 In any case, the rain does not cool down the Argentinian fans, who are boiling for their hero Franco Colapinto!

20h18 – ⚠️ Latest FIA press release: "The intensity of the rain has increased and visibility is deteriorating. We will wait another 15 minutes. Nothing will happen before 16:45 (local time) at the earliest." This doesn't bode well...

20h15 – 🚨 Another postponement: start of Q1 now expected at 16:45 p.m. local time, or 20:45 p.m. French time...

20h12 – It is recalled that sunset is scheduled for 18:12 local time in São Paulo. If the qualifications were to start in about fifteen minutes, they would end at 17:30 local time… if all goes well.

20h10 – The Safety Car returned to the track for a new inspection lap…

20h07 – McLaren once again had to use team orders to favour Lando Norris in the Sprint race in Brazil, with a view to the championship. A strategy assumed and accepted by both drivers, says Andrea Stella.

Stella takes on team orders at McLaren: "Both drivers are totally on board with this type of approach"

20h02 – 🚨 New postponement: after the inspection of the track by the Safety Car, the race direction considers that there is still too much standing water. The expected start time for Q1 is 20:30, French time.

19h55 – The Safety Car driven by Bernd Mayländer takes to the track to assess the track conditions. The German could (or could not) give the green light to start qualifying.

19h47 – 🚨 Ouch: another delay to the expected start time for Q1! The FIA now says the plan is to start qualifying at 20:15pm French time.

19h39 – 🌧️ Here are pictures of the current state of the weather conditions, which have (very) slightly improved over the last ten minutes, even if it continues to rain.

19h30 – 🚨 New update from the FIA: qualifying should start at 16pm local time, or 20pm French time… if and only if conditions continue to improve!

19h25 – In any case, at Mercedes, we have fun in the rain with Andrea Kimi Antonelli!

19h21 – ⚠️ Information from the FIA: "The medical car will now do a lap of the track to give its opinion on the condition of the track."

19h15 – 🔎 While waiting for Formula 1, you can follow our live commentary on the last 45 minutes of the 8 Hours of Bahrain, with the outcome for the two Hypercar titles in WEC.

19h08 – 💬 Frédéric Vasseur, director of the Team Ferrari, gives an update on the situation on Canal+.

19h05 – In addition to the rain, it is mainly the visibility for the rescue helicopters which prevents the stewards from launching this qualifying session.

19h03 – 🔎 The last time qualifying was postponed to Sunday was in 2019, at the Japanese Grand Prix.

19h00 – 🚨 Next FIA update at… 19:30pm French time! No running for the next 30 minutes!

18h57 – 🕰️ It is 14:57 in Brazil, and sunset is expected at 18:21 in São Paulo. If the rain were to continue, the stewards could decide to postpone the Grand Prix qualifying to Sunday morning due to the lack of visibility.

18h52 – ⛈️ Our Dutch colleague Erik van Haren shared on X a photo of the weather radar for the next hour… no need to tell you that it’s going to rain again, and a lot!

18h48 – ⏪️ If you missed the Sprint race held earlier today and Lando Norris’ victory, here is the summary!

Oscar Piastri gives the sprint to Lando Norris, McLaren double

18h45 – ⛈️ Videos of heavy rain at Interlagos are rife on social media, and looking at these images, it’s hard to believe that Q1 will start in the next few minutes…

18h42 – ❌⛈️ And the main information before these qualifications is that it is raining a lot on the Interlagos circuit! A thunderstorm is forecast for the next hour, which has prompted race management to delay the start of qualifying... Next update at 19pm (French time), but there is little reason to be truly optimistic…

18h40 – 👋 Good evening everyone ! Welcome to this live commentary to follow together the qualifications of the Brazilian GP, twenty-first round of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
