This is the nice surprise of the Catalan round: on a route that she thought was unsuitable for the A524, Alpine had his best weekend of the season during the Spanish Grand Prix. After astonishing qualifications, with the two French horses in the Top 8, the Blues managed to score three additional points thanks to 9th place in Pierre Gasly and 10th placeEsteban Ocon. A new double finish in the points – the second in a row after Canada – which allows the French team to gain a position in the Manufacturers' championship, in 7th place ahead of Haas.

A good overall result but which could have been even better without a few hiccups during the race. The two teammates, who got off to a cautious start, each encountered small problems. As for Pierre Gasly, it was a pit stop that was a little too long which cost him 8th place, lost to Sergio Pérez on the penultimate lap. But the Rouennais nevertheless remained happy with his performance at the end of the Spanish Grand Prix.

“I think we can be very satisfied. It was a very good weekend, told No. 10 at the microphone of Canal+. We had a good qualifying with both cars in the Top 10 and today we managed to have a good race, scoring points with both cars. It was positive. We managed to get into a bit of a fight with one McLaren and Red Bull for a while. It's sure that it's a bit of a shame for 8th place, but we know that we're progressing and that's what's most important. »

“[I had] A little more trouble on the hard tires at the end, he added, further emphasizing the progress to be made in the French clan. It was a lot to manage during the race. It is true that it was very hot. I think overall we had a good race. There are small things to improve. The first pit stop, we lost a little time. And afterwards, in the car, I wasn't super comfortable, a bit like yesterday, but we manage to perform well and we manage to score points three times in the last three races, so we have to look at the positive. Overall, it's good, now we have to continue and try to get a little more each time. »

Alpine must understand this gain in competitiveness

As for Esteban Ocon, less energetic than his teammate throughout the weekend, feelings are more mixed. The Ebroician explained that a problem on his Alpine had handicapped him from the first laps.

“Positive, yes, because we finished in the points… very positive, maybe not. It’s that 9th and 10th aren’t a lot of points. We think we had a problem on the flat floor, something we caught on the front of the floor at the start of the race, declared the Frenchman at the microphone of Canal+. For us, the race was very difficult. The car didn't handle well at all. The engineers just told us that there was a problem at the front of the car, so we need to understand what it was exactly and why we had this problem. So, we still limit the problems by still finishing in the points, but it was hot and it normally shouldn't have been so hot. »

now Alpine must consolidate its place in the middle of the pack and take advantage of the ongoing momentum during the next two rounds, which will take place over the next two weeks (Austria and Great Britain). Above all, the arrowed A will have to understand this unexpected performance gain in order to progress over time. “Of course we will have to find answers. It’s true that here, things worked much better than we expected., conceded Pierre Gasly. There's a lot to understand, but overall, we're heading in the right direction. We hope that in Austria, we will be able to repeat what we are doing in these last races. »

The effect of Flavio “Il Magnifico”? A boost in performance, certainly, but one that the team doesn't know how to explain, which is worrying!
