In Canada, has Mercedes finally found the right formula?

Thanks to a new front wing, the star brand achieved a substantial leap in performance in Montreal. To the point of having stolen pole position from Max Verstappen and clinched (finally) a first podium in 2024. If it is still too tight to envisage victory, Mercedes nevertheless seems to be showing real signs of progress.

The slight grin of Toto wolff had nothing to do with the incongruity of the situation. A few seconds earlier, however, its driver George Russell had won the first pole position of Mercedes from Hungary 2023 despite the exact same time of Max Verstappen came after his (1'12“000). A funny situation that we had seen more in Formula 1 since 1997 and the threesome Villeneuve-Schumacher-Frentzen at the Jérez final.

In the German garage, the boss refused to exult. A smirk, a neutral look at the camera, and not much else. No hug, no clenched fist. It must be said that the last two and a half years have profoundly changed Toto's relationship with his emotions. It is as if he now refuses all joy, in order to better protect himself from the disappointment that (too) often accompanies his rare celebrations.

In Canada, however, we may have witnessed the turning point of the Mercedes season. The idea is not to survive
