  • Do not trust the ranking because it does not represent hierarchy at all. At the end of this first hour of driving of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, it was somewhat turned upside down with in particular the best time of Lewis Hamilton in 1'12“169 ahead Oscar piastri (+0“029) and his garage neighbor George Russell (+0“126).
  • However, it is impossible to get carried away and say to yourself that Mercedes will play for victory in the Principality because the running plans were very different from each other. Charles Leclerc et Ferrari have for example placed the emphasis on hard tires with a stint of 20 laps compared to just 7 on mediums. The Monegasque finished 5th, 0 behind Lewis Hamilton, but you can bet that he wasn't 228% in this first session. Same case for Max Verstappen, “only” 11th, more than 8 tenths behind the best mark with the mediums.
  • The Dutchman, however, was not entirely satisfied with the behavior of his Red Bull, still capricious like at Imola the previous week. It's only a matter of time and adjustments, several of which he tried during these FP1, before he returns to center stage.
  • In the last quarter of an hour, the session was briefly interrupted after contact from Guanyu-Zhou with the barrier at the exit of Sainte Dévote. The debris left on the track by the Chinese forced the race management to wave the red flag which was erased 10 minutes from the checkerboard.
  • At Alpine, all efforts have been put on the side ofEsteban Ocon since he is the only one who was able to really ride in this session. Indeed, Pierre Gasly quickly encountered technical problems related to the engine. Asked to return to his garage after only 10 minutes, the Norman was able to leave it for just one lap before diving back into the pit lane.
  • His mechanics rushed to try to get him back on track. Mission accomplished with just under two minutes remaining with the return of Pierre Gasly for a procedural round. Alpine mentioned a hydraulic problem with the turbo wastegate. A far from ideal start to the weekend with the 20e space and above all little rolling. Esteban Ocon finished 18e.
