Work continues at Spa-Francorchamps. As part of the company's 2024-2028 strategy, adopted in the fall of 2023, the management of the Belgian route has started a new process of resurfacing the track with the aim of improving safety conditions on the track and guarantee the best conditions for pilots.

In total, three portions of the Toboggan des Ardennes will be targeted by this project. This will represent 3,5 kilometers of track and more than 600 meters in the pitlane, or approximately 43 m2 of surface. The areas affected by this project, which takes place from June 9 to 14, are:

  • From turn 17 to 2, i.e. from Blanchimont to Eau rouge, including the fast pit lane
  • From turn 4 to 8, i.e. from Kemmel to Brussels turn
  • From turn 14 to 15, i.e. from the Campus turn to the Paul Frère turn

« This is another major project which is starting and which represents significant portions of the Circuit, half of the track will in fact be resurfaced, notes the general director Amaury Bertholome. It’s a real challenge and we relied on the advice of specialized companies. The duration of the work may seem short and the recovery after installation quick, but their studies have shown that it is possible to drive the day after the work. Laying new tarmac has also been shown to require specific weather conditions. In the event of a temperature difference, the resistance of the coating can be problematic, which prompted us to carry out this work in June. It is in fact preferable to carry out the work over a short period of time but at a time when there is the least difference in temperature between day and night. »

As a reminder, in 2022, a first part of the route was resurfaced between Eau Rouge and Raidillon and between the Brussels bend and Speaker Corner. The doors will reopen on June 15, in time to welcome the two biggest events of the year on site: the 24 Hours of Spa (June 26-30) and the Belgian Grand Prix of F1 (July 26-28).
