Distanced by Red Bull in the first relay, Norris returned at the end of the test. The Briton, winner for the first time in Formula 1 in Miami, was very close to doubling the stakes in Imola! It only took seven tenths, or as he said after the finish, one or two extra laps…

“It pains me to say it but with one or two more rounds, I think I would have had it! I fought until the last lap but we just lost a little too much time compared to Max at the start of the race. He was much better in the first stint, we were better in the second. We had a difficult first half of the race, and things went much better in the second part. With one or two more laps it would have been magnificent, but it wasn't the day! »

Fighting at the top, a habit to get into

Starting from the first row, Norris benefited from a penalty imposed on his teammate Oscar piastri. Enough to prove that the McLaren were clearly the second force on the field this weekend, or potentially the first, given the difficulties encountered by Sergio Pérez at Red Bull. A position that the Woking team must still learn to assume, according to its British driver.

Norris joined McLaren in 2019, after a disastrous season for the British team. Gradually, he accompanied his team in a gradual rise to the top of Formula 1. First becoming the driver with the most podiums without a victory, then abandoning this status two weeks ago, in being victorious in Miami. If these results were surprises before, they must become the daily lot of McLaren, for Lando Norris.

“All weekend I was convinced that we were in the fight with Ferrari and Red Bull. We have to get used to it, the team does a very good job, we have to focus on doing the same things every time. Now we are fighting for victories. It's surprising to be disappointed to miss out on a win, but after Miami and our improvements, that's what we should expect. »
