Since its ouster from the calendar of the Formula 1 in 2018, Malaysia regularly seeks to reconnect with its Grand Prix. The Asian country is bringing down a new map at the start of 2024 with the desire of the giant Petronas to bring F1 back to the Sepang circuit, according to the Reuters news agency.
Petronas' plan to bring back the F1 race was revealed at a public meeting organized by the company's Chairman and Managing Director, Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz, on Tuesday (January 30), according to Reuters. The sources behind this information, however, refused to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to this media.
Petronas, Malaysia's only Fortune 500 company, has secured naming rights to the Sepang International Circuit for three years from October 2023. The circuit continues to host races from MotoGP and other continental motorsport events like the Asian Le Mans Series or the GT World Challenge Asia.
The sources did not specify the reasons for this return. Petronas, the SIC and the Malaysian prime minister's office did not respond to requests for interviews.
Petronas has always sponsored the Malaysian Grand Prix, from its appearance on the calendar in 1999 to the last edition in autumn 2017. Since 2010, the Malaysian oil company has also been title sponsor of the team. Mercedes.
