La Formula 1 leaves the Middle East, heading to Oceania for the Australian GP, third round of the 2024 season. Red Bull, imperial in Sakhir (Bahrain) and on the Corniche of Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), once again advance as the big favorites on the semi-urban route of Albert Park, in Melbourne.
Introduced to the Formula 1 calendar in 1996, the Albert Park circuit traditionally hosted the opening round of the championship, a tradition which has been lost in recent years and the emergence of circuits in the Middle East (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia…).
In 2024, it will be the 37th edition of the Australian GP, the 27th to take place in Melbourne. The Albert Park layout has been significantly modified in 2022, including the removal of a bend between turns 8 and 9 in order to create a longer “straight”. Small feature: the circuit includes no less than four DRS zones!
Among the current drivers, if five have already won in Melbourne (Fernando Alonso in 2006, Valtteri Bottas in 2019, Charles Leclerc in 2022, Max Verstappen in 2023), alone Lewis Hamilton won several times (2008 and 2015). The race lap record was set by Sergio Pérez in 2023, with a time of 1'20″235.
