After Spain, it's time for the second stage of this summer triple-header with the Austrian GP! THE Red Bull Ring hosts the eleventh round of the 2024 F1 season, but also the third Sprint weekend of the year. This is the 37th time that the discipline has visited the Alpine country, and the 35th time that the Spielberg circuit – which has had many names over the years (Österreichring, A1-Ring then Red Bull Ring) – has received the Formula 1 since 1970.
The Red Bull Ring, renowned for its "old-fashioned" characteristics with a hilly road and grass or gravel runoffs, is one of the shortest circuits on the calendar with only 4,318 kilometers to complete a lap. With its long straights – or almost – it is in Austria that the lap times are the fastest, generally under the 1'10 mark.
As usual, there will be three DRS zones on the track, all three located on the straights of the circuit. Be careful, however, with the track limits, particularly at turn 1 and in the sequence of turns 9 and 10. In 2023, many drivers were penalized for non-compliance with these track limits.
On the 2024 grid, only four drivers won at the Austrian GP: Lewis Hamilton (2016) Valtteri Bottas (2017 and 2020), Charles Leclerc (2022) et Max Verstappen (2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023). The race lap record is held by Carlos Sainz : the Spaniard had achieved a time of 1'05″619 with McLaren in 2020, for the return of Formula 1 post-containment.
