Here we are: the Formula 1 is back this weekend with the kick-off of the 2025 season in Melbourne, for the Australian GP (March 14-16)! The twenty drivers are returning to school with a significantly revamped and rejuvenated grid (six rookies in 2025, something not seen since 2010). This opening round will be an opportunity to see the drivers in their new colors, such as Lewis Hamilton in Ferrari, Carlos Sainz in Williams or, Esteban Ocon in Haas.
Introduced to the Formula 1 calendar in 1996, the Albert Park circuit traditionally hosted the opening round of the championship, a tradition that had been lost in recent years with the emergence of circuits in the Middle East (Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, etc.). In 2025, Melbourne is once again the scene of the first race of the season: because of Ramadan, the rounds organized in the Middle East have been postponed to April.
In 2025, it will be the 38th edition of the Australian GP, the 28th to take place in Melbourne. The Albert Park layout has been significantly modified in 2022, including the removal of a corner between turns 8 and 9 in order to create a longer "straight". A small peculiarity: the circuit includes no less than four DRS zones!
Among the current drivers, if six of them have already won in Melbourne (Fernando Alonso in 2006, Valtteri Bottas in 2019, Charles Leclerc in 2022, Max Verstappen in 2023, Carlos Sainz in 2024) at the Australian GP, only Lewis Hamilton has won multiple times (2008 and 2015). The race lap record was set by Charles Leclerc in 2024, with a time of 1'19″813.
