Two weeks after the sublime victory of Charles Leclerc in front of the fans in Monza, the Formula 1 leaves Europe and heads to Baku for the Azerbaijan GP (September 13-15), the seventeenth round of the 2024 season. This year, the Azeri capital hosts the discipline for the seventh time in its history since 2016 (once under the name European Grand Prix, in 2016), the sixth street meeting of the championship.
The Baku circuit immediately entered posterity, particularly with its endless straight between turns 16 and the first turn, which is more than two kilometres long! The winding section in the old town with the famous, very narrow sequence of turns 8-9-10 has become the postcard of the Azeri circuit. At 6,003 kilometres long, it offers drivers the opportunity to reach mind-blowing top speeds: in 2016, the Williams de Valtteri Bottas had even (unofficially) reached the 378 km/h mark! The Baku track is also the only one on the calendar to be below sea level.
As usual, there will be two DRS zones, one on the start-finish straight and one on the following straight, after Turn 2. On the 2024 grid, five drivers have already won in Baku: Sergio Pérez twice (2021, 2023), Max Verstappen (2022), Valtteri Bottas (2019), Lewis Hamilton (2018) et Daniel Ricciardo (2017). The race lap record is held by Charles Leclerc, who set a time of 1'43″003 at the Azerbaijan GP in 2019.
