The manufacturer of the Formula 1, Pirelli, has revealed the different possible strategies for the Mexican GP. According to the Italian supplier, the teams are expected to opt for a one-stop strategy in Mexcio, using only the hardest tyres on offer. The soft tyres are not expected to be used on Sunday, barring any unforeseen circumstances or a very aggressive strategy at the start.
According to Pirelli, the drivers have four strategic options: the first with a start on Medium tyres, with a stop around the 28th lap to put on Hard tyres and finish the race. The second would be the exact opposite with a start on Hard tyres, a first stint extended until around the 40th lap and a switch to Mediums to finish the Mexican GP. The third, more daring, would be a start on Soft tyres with a stop around the 19th lap to finish on Hard tyres.
The latest strategy proposed by Pirelli, supposedly slower but more aggressive on paper, is a two-stop strategy with a start on Soft tyres, to gain more momentum at the launch, followed by two stints on Mediums. The first stop would come around lap 13, before a second pit stop around lap 42.
In terms of the remaining sets of tires for the Mexican GP, all drivers – with the exception of Aston Martin and Sauber – still have at least one set of Hard and Medium tyres unused. Among the four Top Teams, Red Bull chose to keep one train of Hards and two trains of Mediums, while Mercedes, Ferrari et McLaren have a train of Hards and a train of Mediums still new.
As a reminder, Pirelli brought the softest tires in its range to Mexico on the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez: the C3 (hard), the C4 (medium) and the C5 (soft).
