A Grand Prix winner on four wheels facing a world champion on two wheels… on board a vehicle without wheels! Ahead of this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix, Alinghi Red Bull Racing welcomed two motorsport stars, Daniel Ricciardo and Marc Márquez, for a boat race in Barcelona.

The two pilots – who also had the chance to sail on the two AC40 boats – competed against each other at the host site of the next America's Cup (August 22 to October 27). Ricciardo and Márquez faced off along the Barcelona waterfront in a friendly competition reaching speeds of almost 90 km/h.

It was ultimately the Australian driver who took the upper hand, beating the Catalan champion of MotoGP on his land. “The speed is completely different. Maybe in kilometers per hour it's slower, but the feeling of speed is very strong, confided the future Ducati rider. When you're in it, you don't feel like you're flying... but when I saw Daniel's boat flying alongside us, I realized that was the case too!

“The way these boats are built and their structure is very similar to the cockpit of a racing car. Formula 1, said Daniel Ricciardo. They are very sensitive to wind, so aerodynamics also have common points. This is very similar to what we do, with small movements and everything has to be done with great finesse. »
