This is a calmer qualifying session than in car which took place at the Guia circuit in Macau. Competing for the GT World Cup, the 16 drivers at the start were generally more cautious. Ultimately, despite not being the most expected given how things unfolded, Antonio Fuoco seized pole position thanks to a time of 2:15.535 set at the end of Q2. Right behind him, another Ferrari will try to take power in the qualifying race, since it is indeed Yifei Ye who completes an all-Italian front row.

Winner of the GT World Cup in 2017, Swiss driver Edoardo Mortara set the third fastest time in the session, just ahead of Belgian Alessio Picariello. Behind Joel Eriksson and Raffaele Marciello – a two-time winner in Macau – the champion DTM In 2025, Ayhancan Güven will have to start the race from seventh position. However, while expectations were high for many other drivers on the grid, things did not go as planned for at least three of them.

False hope for Boccolacci, disappointment for Vanthoor and van der Linde

While Q2 was conducted with due care regarding flag waving, the same could not be said for the start of Q1. Making a mistake with 22 minutes remaining in the session, South African Sheldon van der Linde was the first – and only – driver to hit the wall. Despite his purple BMW sustaining only minor damage, he had to abandon any real attempt at qualifying.

In a different vein, Christopher Haase, Edoardo Mortara, and Frenchman Dorian Boccolacci were investigated at the end of Q1 for allegedly using excessive power during qualifying. While the first two appear to have escaped punishment, the Frenchman, who initially qualified in the top 10, ultimately had to be demoted to 14th position. It was in this position that the driver... Porsche will have to take part in Saturday's qualifying race, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 am (French time).

Also of note is the 11th place finish of Belgian Laurens Vanthoor, who was expected to be much higher in the standings. Having suffered the first major setback of the weekend on Friday, he explained that his accident had clearly affected his performance, particularly due to significant damage, despite the tireless efforts of his engineers.
