It had been brewing for weeks, and now Carson Hocevar has finally secured his first Cup Series victory. The 23-year-old chose one of the best venues to claim his maiden win, taking the Talladega race, which, as is often the case, was marked by a "Big One" involving no fewer than 26 cars shortly after the halfway point. The Hurricane, as it's nicknamed, struck in Alabama, and if some fans weren't yet fully on the side of the young Michigan native, his post-race celebration quickly won them over.
Hocevar actually sat on the window sill of his Chevrolet, taking advantage of his 1,93m height to simply drive the car to the finish line, stick it against the wall and perform a burnout, all while being half out of his car! For the one whom some compare to a young Dale Earnhardt, the first victory could only be memorable.
"I've been thinking about it for a while. And I've messed it up in every possible way! But it didn't matter if it took me 20 minutes or whatever, I was going to figure it out eventually."he said after indeed taking some time to find the right method! "I am so grateful"he added, to the cheers of the crowd in the stands. "This is the biggest dream I've ever had. Thank you all. I couldn't have done any better. I hope my grandfather is watching. My grandmother passed away last year, and I'm so grateful to be able to give my grandfather a trophy now. It's just incredible, I'm so grateful. I knew we were going to win. I was absolutely certain of it."
The race undeniably changed on lap 115 when leader Bubba Wallace (23XI Racing) crashed into the wall on the back straight. Four drivers managed to get through unscathed before almost the entire field was caught up in one of the biggest accidents in recent years. Championship leader Tyler Reddick (23XI Racing) was involved, as were all three Team Penske drivers.
This significantly altered the dynamics between manufacturers, with Chevrolet ending up with the most cars in good condition to finish the race. Alex Bowman (Hendrick Motorsports) then pushed Hocevar to victory, while Chris Buescher's Ford (RFK Racing), which finished second, tried to fend off the attacks of Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Hyak Motorsports). With his first win, Carson Hocevar climbs to eighth place in the overall standings, still led by Reddick before the next race on Sunday in Texas.
