The images took many observers back 25 years, to when the NASCAR has had to learn to live without Dale Earnhardt, who died on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. This time, flags, photos, and symbols reminding us of Kyle Busch, who tragically died last Thursday, were everywhere. Starting with the giant screen at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which displayed the photo of the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion throughout the weekend, whenever the cars weren't on the track. The start of the Coca-Cola 600 offered a welcome distraction, but it didn't erase the memory.
All the spectators rose to their feet on the eighth lap of the race, to honor once again the man who leaves a huge void. The first driver to bring victory Toyota In the 2008 NASCAR Cup Series, Kyle Busch certainly motivated the Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI Racing teams, with Christopher Bell, Denny Hamlin, and Tyler Reddick battling for the lead for most of the race. Driving the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, Kyle Larson also made several strong runs throughout the race. Busch had achieved his first successes with this same car between 2005 and 2007.
At the end of NASCAR's annual marathon, strategy and rain would play a significant role. With the race cautioned 44 laps from the finish, Daniel Suárez decided to use only two tires, while his rivals were on four. He immediately took the lead and never relinquished it. When the rain finally arrived on lap 373 of the 400-lap race, Suárez was in the lead, and with the race unable to restart, the Mexican driver won the Coca-Cola 600 at the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. This was the same team for which Kyle Busch drove in the Truck Series, having won at Dover six days before his death, also driving the No. 7 truck. The signs are often inexplicable…
"It really means a lot to me.", said Suárez about this victory. “I’ve been saying it for years: this is my favorite race of the year. My family can be here every year. It’s often the only race they can attend. It’s been a very tough week. Kyle was an exceptional person, truly. This one is for Kyle. For Kyle, for (his wife) Samantha, for (his son) Brexton, for (his daughter) Lennix, for his whole family… This one definitely has a special flavor because of Kyle. This victory is for him. Without Kyle, I wouldn’t have been the second-division champion, and I wouldn’t have had my shot in the Cup Series. Winning this race for him is incredible.”
