Clearly, the world of NASCAR faces a particularly difficult holiday season. After the plane crash that claimed the lives of former driver Greg Biffle and his family, it is now the turn of Denny Hamlin, runner-up in the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series, to be affected by a family tragedy.
The home of her parents, Dennis and Mary Lou, caught fire Sunday night, and while both occupants managed to escape the flames, they suffered serious injuries. Dennis Hamlin died at the age of 75, while Mary Lou Hamlin remains hospitalized in critical condition. Local authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire, which destroyed more than 40% of the Hamlin property.
Dennis Hamlin, his son's biggest supporter in his racing career, had been suffering from health problems in recent years, which gave his son Denny's 2025 season a special significance. In tears after his victory in Las Vegas, the sixtieth of his career, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver felt it was his father's last chance to see him clinch the championship title he had been chasing since 2006.
He ultimately finished second in the 2025 championship, after dominating the Phoenix finale and coming within three laps of winning his first title. A caution period at the end of the race caused a restart, during which Kyle Larson finally overtook him to secure his second Cup Series championship.
Dennis and Mary Lou Hamlin had just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on December 28th. The AUTOhebdo team sends its condolences to the Hamlin family.
