The pilot of the Toyota Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 11 was one of the three strong men in the race, along with Chase Elliott (Hendrick Motorsports) and Christopher Bell (Joe Gibbs Racing). The latter was leading the race before losing control for the first time, just after the end of the second segment, which he won. Trying an offbeat strategy, Mother Nature helped him by forcing the NASCAR to neutralize the race on the 337th of the 400 laps of the race, for a few drops of rain.
He was able to stop in the pits after everyone else and emerge in the lead. The battle was then on with Hamlin, until a nearly hour-long interruption due to another downpour. The two men resumed their battle at the restart until contact, and once again it was Bell who found himself in the way. Hamlin wasn't done with his teammates, as he battled with Chase Briscoe until the finish of the race before winning for the fourth time this season, the first since the birth of his son Jameson.
“Things were going pretty well before the rain and I had to deal with a few restarts at the end of the race.”, Hamlin explained after capturing his 58th Cup Series victory. "It was tough, these guys gave me a hard time, no doubt. Winning here at Dover is very special for me. It's a place I wasn't very good at for the first half of my career and then to have two straight wins here the last two years is incredible."
After leading for more than half the race, Chase Elliott had to settle for sixth place after experiencing an issue during one of his first pit stops. He rejoined before the rain interruption, but was the first driver to pit for four tires before the final restarts, and he was unable to take advantage of the opportunity to move back toward the front of the race.
In NASCAR's mid-season tournament, the final lineup is now known, and it's a surprise! Ty Dillon (Kaulig Racing), the last seed, will face Ty Gibbs (Joe Gibbs Racing) next week at Indianapolis for a million dollars. They defeated John Hunter Nemechek (Legacy Motor Club) and Tyler Reddick (23XI Racing) respectively to win this round at Dover.
