To secure his first victory, the 23-year-old driver had to dig deep in the closing laps of the Bristol race. While Ryan Blaney seemed destined for a sure win, Chase Elliott's (Hendrick Motorsports) spin with 30 laps to go reshuffled the deck. Although the drivers had enough fuel to finish, the decision came down to which tires to change. Blaney opted to change four, Kyle Larson (Hendrick Motorsports) only two… and Gibbs none.
"Whatever happens, I don't want to give up my position on the track.""He told his team over the radio," he said, and so he started with four cars between him and the duo of Larson and Blaney, four cars that had also not used the pit lane. The two frontrunners, however, quickly moved up through the field, aided by an exceptional restart from Tyler Reddick (23XI Racing), who climbed to second place and began to harass Gibbs for the lead!
The young driver of the No. 54 held on, and once Reddick lost ground, it opened the door for Larson and Blaney, who did everything they could to dislodge Gibbs from the lead. It seemed impossible until three laps from the end, when Kyle Busch (Richard Childress Racing) sent Riley Herbst (23XI Racing) into a spin. The race was therefore extended, and Gibbs would now have to keep Blaney behind him, with no cars between them. Against all odds, he succeeded, taking the victory by crossing the finish line right next to the 2023 champion. Overcome with emotion, Ty Gibbs first thought of his father, Coy, who passed away in 2022, the night after the young driver's O'Reilly Auto Parts Series championship title.
"Yeah, it's great."Gibbs said. “It’s great to be surrounded by great people. It’s great to be in this situation. I would have loved for my dad to see this. I knew he knew it was going to happen and that he was expecting it too. Yes, it was a great day for us. My guys didn’t give up. The pit crew is just incredible. They’re our family. It’s been great. So it’s really great. I’m very honored to be in this situation.”
