The Belgian climate has regained its rights. After a morning under the sun, the heavenly floodgates opened 15 minutes before the EuroNASCAR Pro competitors took off in Zolder. There was a significant absence: the 56 car that Marc Goossens was to drive was lying at the back of his stand, having been fairly corrected by Sven Van Laere at the end of the morning during the final moments of qualifying for the EuroNASCAR2 series.
This rain which fell heavily changed the track conditions significantly. To the point that the race management decided to delay the start by 10 minutes (just to allow the mechanics to equip the cars with rain tires) then to complete the first two of the eighteen laps planned in the program under Safety Car.
On a bitumen full of traps (some places dried out, others remained very wet), Paul Jouffreau, the author of the Superpole, managed to contain the attacks of Giorgio Maggi, his neighbor on the grid. Then he took the lead for a moment before handing it over again to Jouffreau.
The young Girondin then steadily widened the gap on the rest of the pack before Lucas Lasserre, 3rd on the grid, pointed the nose of his Mustang into the leader's bumper. A few laps from the finish, this Franco-French duel was breathtaking. Jouffreau seemed to perfectly resist the attacks of his compatriot until the start of the last lap.
There, Lasserre plunged into a mouse hole to seize, at the end of the right of the canal, the lead of the race and, a few moments later, cross the finish line as the winner. A first place which allows this very experienced driver to take the lead by 1 point over Vittorio Ghirelli.
" I am a lion "
« The double points system at the last meeting is a good thing but it's tomorrow that I would like to cross the line at the top of the championship, smiled the winner.
This 1st place is proof that you should never give up. I am a lion, a fighter. Thanks to the whole team who did an excellent job and gave me a perfectly tuned car. »
As for Vittorio Ghirelli (Chevrolet Camaro), he had to be content with a 6th place which brings him to 2nd place – 1 point behind Lasserre – in the provisional championship standings.
« From the first meters, I was confronted with faulty windshield wipershe explained. With the water splashing from the other competitors, I could barely see anything. In this context, I am delighted to finish limiting the damage. »
Tomorrow, at 14:05 p.m., the EuroNASCAR Pro competitors will set off for the last race of the 2023 season. A sprint of 18 laps (75 km) at the end of which we will know the name of the champion.
