A few hours before the race that will decide who will be crowned champion in EuroNASCAR Pro, it was the 25 drivers of the 2nd Division who heated up the Zolder crowd with their final confrontation of the season in a 15-lap event.
A special feature of this championship which favours panache: not only are 8 points awarded to the driver who makes the best comeback, but in addition, the starting grid for the 2nd competition is established on the basis of each driver's best times during the first round.
This is how Thomas Toffel found himself on pole position next to… Claudio Remigio Cappelli. Very cleverly, the two men had concluded a non-aggression pact in the first left after the start. It was in the bend of the canal that the Italian made a decisive attack that put him definitively out of reach.
"I admit that winning pole position stressed me out a bit, Toffel confided on arrival. But I am delighted with the result. Finishing 2 tenths of a second behind a driver of Cappelli's calibre is rewarding. Especially since we had to avoid the pitfalls of the track, which was wet in the first few laps. Fortunately, it dried out afterwards.
"I had a 45-point lead over Patrick Schober before this final confrontation, Martin Doubeck said. "So I didn't take any risks. By finishing just behind him, I secured my title." As for the winner of the race, he was more radiant than ever.
"With three wins in four races, I'm finishing the season in the best possible way," explained the Italian. With a bit more experience, I think I can fight for the title next year. In the meantime, I'm going to celebrate my crown in the Legend Trophy category. Until the finish, I didn't know I could do it. It's a very good surprise for me."
