It was on the “Tricky Triangle” of Pocono that Blaney won his first victory in the Cup Series in 2017. He had not won there since, and he had to scrap against Denny Hamlin (Gibbs), for whom the track is a bit like one of his vacation homes in the Poconos Mountains, popular with Americans. The driver who also owns 23XI Racing is in fact the man to have won the most races on this very special track!
“I feel like we've hit a great stride and our cars have been fast over the last couple of months.”, Blaney said. “Honestly, I think we let a few races slip away that we should have won. It's really cool to win here again. I won here seven years ago for my first Cup victory, so it's great to be back in Victory Lane. »
Crashes that are expensive
It was with 44 laps to go that Blaney took control of the race for good, after a rather lively sequence following the end of the second segment of the event. Two accidents took place on two successive restarts, each time involving numerous cars. As has often been the case in recent weeks, Kyle Busch (Childress) was involved in the first of these two crashes, and the result was another retirement for the two-time Cup Series champion. On a restart, the driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet wanted to keep the inside line against Corey LaJoie (Spire). The latter didn't hear it that way and simply pushed Busch into the first corner, sending him into a spin and creating a chain reaction when Busch crossed the track, involving several other cars.
On the next restart, it was Zane Smith (Spire) and John Hunter Nemecheck (Legacy) who saw their races end there. Pocono may be the widest track of the season, but the fact remains that all the drivers want to be on the same area of asphalt! For Ross Chastain (Trackhouse) too, the race will have ended prematurely, after an exit in Turn 3. The driver of the No. 1 is not yet in great danger of missing the play-offs, but with 12 drivers s Having already imposed this season, Chastain will soon have to find the path to victory if he wishes to solidify his position in the play-offs, because he is currently the penultimate qualified, 53 points ahead of Bubba Wallace (23XI), 17th in the list and therefore eliminated for the moment.
This weekend, the NASCAR marks its return to the Indianapolis oval circuit after four years of absence, the races having taken place on the road course since.
