It's rare enough to be worth noting, but the safety car has only been deployed once in this edition of the Bathurst 1000 kilometres. With 30 laps to go, Matt Payne's Mustang (Whole grained Racing) came to a halt against the wall after its driver was unable to negotiate one of the many corners of the dizzying Australian circuit. Before that, it had been 131 laps without any incident and during which the teams were able to put into place the race strategies devised during the week of competition.

Pole position holder Brodie Kostecki made an excellent start, managing to contain the attacks of Broc Feeney (Chevrolet Camaro- Triple Eight Engineering) and especially Richie Stanaway (Ford Mustang- Grove Racing) who went from 4th to 2nd place before the pack even reached the top of the mountain. The first loser of this rather calm start was Cameron Waters (Ford Mustang- Tickford Racing) who fell two places.

The other contenders for the 2024 title are a little further down the rankings. We find Will Brown (Chevrolet Camaro- triple Eight Engineering), the championship leader, in 5th place while his current runner-up, Chaz Mostert (Ford Mustang- Walkinshaw Andretti United) is 8th. The driver of the Mustang n°25 is starting his comeback after missing out on qualifying.

On lap 9, Broc Feeney managed to grab second place from Richie Stanaway. The Grove Racing driver would drop to 5th after Waters and Brown passed him on the long straight in a race-worthy move. Nascar. Brown giving Waters a huge bump allowing him to find the momentum needed to pass Stanaway. In front, Broc Feeney is on a mission. He is more than determined to add to his list of achievements the most famous race in his country. His first stint is perfectly controlled. At his pit stop, he hands the car still in second position to Jamie Whincup, his team manager and teammate for the day. Bathurst is not an individual race, perfect cohesion is essential to be ambitious.

Todd Hazelwood impeccable teammate

If Whincup was impeccable in his role as a team-mate, what can we say about Todd Hazelwood who never failed in his task. The Erebus Motorsport Camaro almost never leaves the first place, whether it is with Kostecki or Hazelwood behind the wheel. The competition has never managed to shake the confidence that the 2023 champion had equipped himself with for this big meeting. Fast on the track and efficient in the pits, his team was also irreproachable. Even at the end of the race when the sky was a little overcast and his Camaro was no longer as lively, Kostecki never made the slightest misstep.

When the race restarted after the safety car, he was authoritative and knew how to contain the ambitions of Broc Feeney who did not give up until the checkered flag. Will Brown crossed the finish line in 3rd position and confirmed that the 2024 title is getting closer and closer for him. He even managed to take a few more points from Chaz Mostert (5th this Sunday morning) still second overall. With a 189-point lead, Brown can start to manage his end of season with two more meetings to go.

The hero of the day is indeed Brodie Kostecki who puts an end to a start to the season that was very complicated for him and Erebus Motorsport. He is an emotional young man who lets his joy burst forth: " I can hardly believe what we just did. I have to say that I felt really good behind the wheel of the car during the whole race. I have to thank the team but also Todd who did an impeccable job. I really look forward to going for a drink with him tonight to celebrate this victory which means a lot to me.. "
