The bonus for the 23-year-old is having secured his 28th pole position. A dream spot at Sydney Motorsport Park, a demanding track where overtaking is often tricky. Feeney will therefore start on the front row alongside the very young Kai Allen (Ford Mustang #26) for the Whole grained Racing.
From the start, Allen's black Mustang was neck and neck with Feeney's. The two cars touched three or four times in the first few corners, but Feeney maintained his lead over Allen and James Golding (Ford Mustang #7). Despite engine overheating—debris clogged his radiator—Feeney continued his push and extended his lead to nearly four seconds over his pursuers. During the first round of pit stops, the positions remained unchanged. However, Brodie Kostecki (Ford Mustang #17) made a strong comeback, climbing to within striking distance of the top five after starting 11th. Will Brown also seemed to be finding his stride, running in 5th position in this final opening race.
The strategies attempt to disrupt a fixed ranking.
The race is fairly static in its first third. Everyone is focused on preserving their tires and conserving fuel. While Feeney is leading the pack, positions are changing very little in the rest of the field. However, Cam Waters' superb recovery in his Tickford Racing Mustang is noteworthy. After 12 laps, he's in 10th place, having started from 20th.
Matt Payne and Grove Racing then launched the first wave of pit stops, hoping to gain positions in the pits. He stopped three laps before Feeney and moved into a prime position on the provisional podium. Shortly after the halfway point, the safety car was deployed to allow for the recovery of James Golding's car. Everyone took advantage of this to make their second pit stop, just as the rain threatened to reshuffle the standings. A massive thunderstorm was approaching Sydney Motorsport Park.
The long-awaited rain changes nothing
At the restart after the Safety Car, Kai Allen undoubtedly pulled off the best overtake of the race, passing Broc Feeney on the outside, on slick tires, on a track that was beginning to get wet. Some drivers tried switching to rain tires, but the majority stayed on slicks for the end of the race. Feeney, playing it safe, managed to retake the lead from Allen at the end of lap 34. While he seemed poised to secure a double podium finish for Grove Racing, Kai Allen suffered a steering problem and had to return to the pits to repair his Mustang. The podium was then taking shape: Feeney leading ahead of Payne and Waters.
For his teammate Will Brown, it was another disappointing day after a collision with Anton de Pasquale and Brodie Kostecki. Brown finished the race at the back of the pack (18th out of 22 classified riders), having also received a penalty for causing the initial incident. He also suffered a malfunction in his cooling suit. Completely exhausted, he went to the medical center for routine checks.
The same problem nearly cost Feeney dearly, leaving him completely drained after the race. Despite being hampered, he secured his second victory of the weekend, finishing ahead of Matt Payne and Cam Waters on the final podium of the day.
In the championship standings, Feeney is in the lead, but tied with Payne on 259 points. A strong performance also from all the drivers. Toyota Supra: all Japanese coupes are in the top 10 of this final round.
The next Supercars event will take place at the same time as the opening of the World Championship. Formula 1 at the Albert Park circuit. Four races are scheduled before the first F1 race in 2026. Melbourne will therefore host the next round from March 5 to 8.
