The Parisian driver won his second race of the season (after Monza last June). It's a great result for the French driver who is up against the armada of Lynk & Co and the Hyundai Elantra, supported by Chinese and Korean manufacturers. The small SP Compétition team, fielding its Cupra Leon, can only rely on its expertise and Aurélien's talent. This Saturday morning, there was no room for doubt; the Frenchman dominated the C1 from start to finish.
Björk doesn't give up on Ehrlacher
He finished ahead of Thed Björk (Lynk&Co), who gained a few points on the World Touring Car Cup leader, Yann Ehrlacher. The Swede has been very clear about his intentions this season; he's here for the title. It slipped through his fingers last year, and the Nordic driver doesn't want to relive that, even if the situation is very different. Intelligent and measured, Björk knows his strengths and understands that ballast management and Balance of Performance (BoP) will make the difference until the final race. Two-time World Cup winner Yann Ehrlacher (2020, 2021) approaches the end of the season with the same mindset: We have to take it race by race. I'm not worried about arriving in Macau under threat from Thed, even though he's very strong on the Guia circuit. I am too.For this first Chinese round, the Frenchman started from 6th place on the grid. Battling throughout the race, he finished 5th, a good result that allowed him to limit the damage. The Alsatian will have the advantage in Race 2 and should rebuild his points tally. He fought for a large part of the race against a prestigious guest in the person of Will Brown, the Australian Supercars champion, returning to TCR (Brown was the first TCR champion in Australian history in 2019). The Triple Eight driver, at the wheel of a Hyundai Elantra, achieved the second-best result for the Korean brand this morning, with Norbert Michelisz making his return to the podium in 3rd place.
Two races remain tomorrow, Sunday. Santiago Urrutia, 10th in C1, will start from pole position in the second race. Yann Ehrlacher is expected to remain in the middle of the grid, three positions ahead of his main rival in the standings, Thed Björk. He will also have to make up ground on Esteban Guerrieri, who will start from the front row in this race. The spectacle looks promising for this second feature of the weekend at the Zhuhou track.
