Koen Wauters: “Motor racing is my holiday”

Presenter of the most popular TV channel in Flanders, singer-leader of the band Clouseau, Koen Wauters is a star in Belgium and the Netherlands. A distinguished amateur driver, he likes to recharge his batteries in Lamera Cup events, where we found him for some very juicy Belgian stories.

Where are you taking us? Usually, the Carpooling are done in road cars, you bet!

We are heading to the Dijon-Prenois circuit (Côte-d'Or), aboard the Lamera of the Fast Kukki Racing team, the team with which I have competed in four Cup events this season. It's tradition. On Friday, before the tests begin, we can take guests in the passenger seat to let them experience the sensations of this well-born prototype. You're in luck, because we're going to take a particularly fun track with some nice curves and lots of climbs and descents.

Why did you choose the Lamera Cup?

I really like the philosophy of this single-make cup. Everyone has the same equipment. Our cars are identical in performance. It's really cool to drive, especially because there are no driving aids. You have to drive fast while taking care of your car. What doesn't spoil anything is that the general atmosphere is good-natured and the track time is very important. For me, it's a nice way to disconnect from my usual job while being very focused behind the wheel.

As a child, did you dream of being a pilot or a singer?

Neither. I dreamed of becoming a professional footballer! I played very well. From the age of 13 to 15, I was regularly selected for the Red Devils (the belgian national team. Ed.). I played for KFC Rhodienne, a club in the 1st Provincial Division. Every year, I had the opportunity to go to Ande
