Regal gives himself some fresh air

Random road conditions and a burned entry joker did not prevent Lionel Régal from winning the second round of the French Championship. The Lyonnais is already at the top of the general classification.

Regal gives himself some fresh air

Known as one of the most selective routes of the season, the Corniche des Cévennes route put the nerves of the competitors to the test, several times caught off guard by the mood swings of the April sky. After being surprised during the tests, like all the tenors of the F3000, by a sudden downpour, Régal was overtaken by a new downpour just before the start of his first climb. By trying too hard to outrun Schatz and Petit, who started after him, he only managed a masterful spin around the third of the course. Superiorly shod for the rain, Petit could do nothing against the Norma sport-protos of Cyrille Frantz, Cannata and Castellana, mounted before the rain.

Run in the dry, the second round saw Régal regain the lead ahead of Schatz while Petit, with overheated tires from halfway through, was only 5th behind Thomas and Frantz. The final climb, the fastest of the day for the entire top 10, allowed Petit, wearing four new slicks, to take second place from Schatz.

Winner of the two Gard rounds of the championship, Régal is already breaking away from his rivals in the F3000, who shared the points from one race to the next. It is therefore Cyrille Frantz, victorious for the second time in sports-protos on his new Norma, this time ahead of the young Cannata and the veteran Castellana, who places himself in the wake of the quadruple French champion.
