A tragic accident had marked the rally In Saint-Joseph on Réunion Island at the end of October, two children, aged nine and twelve, died after being hit by a car, while a third child was in critical condition. Sadly, the girl succumbed to her injuries on November 2nd.
During the Saint Joseph Rally, car number 39 went off the road and struck spectators in an area supposed to be off-limits to the public. While a brother and sister died that same day from their injuries, a third child was in critical condition in pediatric intensive care. The Saint Pierre prosecutor's office confirmed the death of the eight-year-old girl on November 3rd. The father of the two children who died on Sunday was also injured in the incident.
The crew, consisting of Alain Boyer and Jean-Michel Vitry, were uninjured, and their alcohol and drug tests were negative, the Saint-Pierre prosecutor stated. An investigation for manslaughter has been opened by the Public Prosecutor's Office.
« The Réunion Motor Sport League and ASA Réunion learned with deep sadness of the death of the third child injured in the accident that occurred on Saturday at the Saint-Joseph Rally. Our heartfelt thoughts are with his family, already so deeply affected by this tragedy. We offer them our sincerest condolences and express our deepest sympathy, solidarity, and affection during this unimaginable ordeal. " said the Réunion motorsport league on its social media.
This is the second serious accident on French soil. In July 2025, three spectators aged 44, 60 and 70 died during the Rallye de la Fourme d'Ambert (Puy-de-Dôme).
