From October 5 to 12, a familiar face to fans of F1 will come and set its wheels on the roads of the Isle of Beauty. Jos Verstappen, driver in the premier category and now manager of his son, Max, three-time reigning world champion, will participate in the 24e edition of the Historical Tour of Corsica.
For some time now, the Dutchman has converted to rally. He races in the Belgian championship, in which he already has 6 wins, including the Rallye des Ardennes last March. The former driver is even in fifth place in the championship, at the wheel of his Skoda Fabia RS Rally 2.
No representation at the Tour de Corse historique
His co-driver in the Belgian Rally Championship, Renaud Jamoul, is confident. “ It has exceptional braking sensitivity. He presses the pedal very hard to the sticking point, then gradually releases, like an ABS. » An important asset given the fact that its Porsche will obviously have no anti-lock system. But his past as a tarmac driver sometimes handicaps him. “ He does not yet have the reading of the terrain of a pure specialist in the discipline to anticipate changes in track grip. ».
At the wheel of a 911 Porsche 3.0 Carrera 1974 RS, the 52-year-old driver will not be out of place, according to trainer Romain Joffroy, who tested his new driver last May. “ Jos is from the H-gearbox generation, so handling a classic car is not a problem for him, unlike today's F1 drivers. »
One thing is certain, with his past as an F1 driver, he has retained a desire to win which leads us to believe that Jos Verstappen will not go to Corsica to enjoy the roads and landscapes, but to try to perform. We will have to count on other names. Alain Oreille, winner in WRC, Patrick Bernardini, the local double French champion and Bruno Saby, victorious at the Tour de Corse, will also be there.
