Doesn’t this association make sense? Did the two parties really have any choice but to collaborate? In any case, this is good news for the driver, the brand and the WRC2 championship which retains one of the most formidable contenders.
For the Czech Republic manufacturer, the list of candidates has suffered a significant hemorrhage compared to what it was during the year. Indeed, Andreas Mikkelsen joined Hyundai and will no longer be the spearhead of Skoda, but the Norwegian was not the only one to leave. Nikolay Gryazin turned to Citroën and Sami Pajari will evolve on a Toyota. With the departure of these three boys who aimed for victories in 2023 in an RS Rally2, Skoda found itself destitute and to continue aiming for the title in this category, Oliver Solberg was the best (and only?) possible choice . The track leading to Fergus Greensmith may not be completely blocked, but for the moment the Mancunian has not communicated much about his future. If he were to also drive a Fabia, Skoda would have a valuable duo for 2024.
Solberg – Skoda, the choice of reason
On Oliver's side too, Skoda represents his strongest option. If he had discussions to return to Rally1, they did not come to fruition and rather than staying on foot it was better to start again for a program in WRC2 with, it is to be hoped for the young Scandinavian, the maximum number of rounds possible so that he can continue his learning.
In the announcements made by Oliver, but also Skoda, there is no mention of the team that will take care of this program. The Toksport name is no longer in circulation. This would lend credence to the rumor that Skoda Motorsport will regain control of this activity. On the other hand, it was specified that the Swede will carry out the development of the car, which tends to demonstrate that he will be responsible for the task which until now fell to Andreas Mikkelsen.
