Rally Portugal – SS14 – Solberg puts on a show in the rain, taking the lead from Ogier

This SS14 was predicted to be tricky in more ways than one. Rough terrain, bumps and treacherous corners, constant rain... In this chaos, Oliver Solberg almost seemed to fly to take the lead in the Rally of Portugal.

Sami Pajari, Thierry Neuville, And even Sébastien Ogier… This list was none other than the provisional podium of the Rally Portugal before the start of the 14th special stage, the last of Saturday morning's loop. Thanks to Oliver Solberg's fastest time of 11:53.2 (he was also the only one to break the 12-minute barrier), the Swede left the two world champions in his wake. Sébastien Ogier was the first to admit he didn't understand how such a performance could have been achieved in such conditions.

Far from disgracing themselves, Elfyn Evans (2nd in the stage) and Jon Armstrong (3rd) almost believed they could pull off a victory for a moment. The Ford driver held the lead for several minutes, passing second on the road behind a much more struggling Martins Sesks. Shortly after Elfyn Evans' run, Oliver Solberg restored order, while the standings could well continue to shift this afternoon.

Sébastien Ogier finished 8th in SS14, and he wasn't the only one to struggle. In WRC2, the driver who truly impressed was Andreas Mikkelsen. The Skoda driver put four seconds into his closest rival in the category, while Yohan Rossel – already competitive – finished 10 seconds behind the Norwegian. Teemu Suninen remains in the overall lead of the category.
