The 8 last July, Toyota unveiled the GR Yaris Rally2 H2, a hydrogen-powered concept. As already announced, this car will be presented this weekend at the Rally from Finland. Four-time world champion Kankkunen, now deputy team principal of the TGR-WRT team, will take the wheel.
Based on the GR Yaris Rally2 chassis, this concept car features an internal combustion engine powered by compressed hydrogen. This delivers near-zero emissions while retaining the sounds and sensations rally enthusiasts love.
Additionally, this car was developed at TGR-WRT's headquarters in Jyväskylä, Finland, and tested on local roads, including gravel forest tracks similar to those the drivers will be using all weekend.
With this hydrogen Yaris, Toyota wants to "demonstrate the potential of this technology"
The GR Yaris Rally2 H2 Concept will first be revealed and presented to the public at the Jyväskylä service park on Wednesday, July 30, at 16 p.m. local time. It will then be driven by Juha Kankkunen in the heart of the city during the two runs of the Harju mixed special stage, allowing, according to Toyota "for fans to discover the potential of hydrogen as one of the options for the future of motorsport in a carbon-neutral society".
The deputy director of TGR-WRT agrees: “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel myself. It’s a very exciting project for our team, allowing us to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen technology, while retaining the sound and performance of a real rally car. And we hope the fans will enjoy it.”
Before finally looking ahead to a very important weekend for the Japanese team: “Rally Finland is a very special event. The atmosphere created by the fans in Jyväskylä and in the forests is incredible. All our drivers feel great support there and really enjoy driving on the fast Finnish roads. They all have the speed to do well. We worked hard in our pre-event tests to make sure they feel comfortable and confident with the car.”
