Starting today, the WRC resumes its rights in Umeå, Sweden. For the second round of the World Rally Championship, all eyes will be on the Toyota and in particular the one bearing the number 99, driven by local driver Oliver Solberg. The reigning Monte Carlo winner arrives in Sweden as the championship leader and has many arguments in his favor to try and win a second consecutive victory, something not seen in the World Rally Championship since the Monte Carlo-Sweden double of Sébastien Ogier in 2016. Elfyn Evans, the defending champion in Sweden, wants his Monte Carlo revenge and must first make up the numerical and psychological gap separating him from Oliver Solberg. Let's not forget the Hyundai, who after a disastrous Monte Carlo, arrive in Scandinavia better equipped than at Monte Carlo.
Hyundai to get back in the game?
Hayden Paddon is out, and Esapekka Lappi will be behind the wheel of the third Hyundai this weekend. Winner of the rally With the i20N Rally1 Hybrid in 2024, already in a third-man role, Lappi is on a roll, having won the Finnish Rally Championship last year and leading the current season after two victories in the first two rounds, including the Arctic Lapland Rally (which Elfyn Evans dominated overall). Naturally, Hyundai's strengths are focused on its top drivers. Adrien fourmaux et Thierry Neuville, both of whom had a disappointing start to the season. Sweden is also where Mārtiņš Sesks made his debut this season with M-Sportwho will drive the Puma Rally1 seven times this season, and much is also expected of the Irish duo McErlean and Armstrong, the latter having shown promise at Monte Carlo. All the rally stages will be broadcast live on Canal+ Group channels and, of course, with live commentary on our website! Every evening, you can also discover an exclusive magazine on our YouTube channel.
