The Weekly Question – Who is the greatest in WRC history: Sébastien Loeb or Sébastien Ogier?

The Weekly Question is back for a new edition. Each week, you have the opportunity to answer a question about an event that took place the previous weekend or that could take place the next. F1MotoGPRallyEnduranceIndyCarGT… all disciplines will be included. Last weekend, the biggest event in the world of motorsport was caused by none other than… Sébastien Ogier, now a nine-time World Rally Champion WRCHaving won the title at the end of this 2025 season, which he only completed partially, the Gap native thus equaled Sébastien Loeblegendary in more ways than one. For his part, the driver's teammate ToyotaVincent Landais has managed to acquire his very first world title.

At this point, the question arises. Although they operated in very different eras and had very different careers, this symbolic number of nine titles is perhaps the only real common thread linking their two paths. On the one hand, Sébastien Loeb, a driver who won all his titles with Citroën, also achieved the feat of winning his nine crowns consecutively, between 2004 and 2012. Moreover, during the 2006 season, the Alsatian driver accomplished the remarkable feat of winning the championship even though he hadn't participated in the last four rounds of the season.

For his part, Sébastien Ogier has two major arguments in his favor. Firstly, the 42-year-old driver managed to win his nine titles at somewhat different times, and not consecutively. Furthermore, he has won the World Championship with three different Manufacturers: Volkswagen, M-Sportand Toyota. While Sébastien Loeb is often credited with having left a stronger mark than any other driver in the WRC, is there really one champion above the others in your opinion? Don't forget to vote and share your opinion in the comments.

My mistake, it was Bernard Occelli who was world champion in 1994 with Didier Auriol.

Absolutely agree with the previous comments! A pointless question, completely irrelevant. In France, we are incredibly fortunate to have two exceptional World Rally Championship drivers who, each in their own era, dominated the WRC. Our two Sebs have each won nine world championship titles. Breathtaking! Of course, I haven't forgotten the co-drivers who more than contributed to this undisputed dominance. Daniel and his nine titles, a feat unlikely to be equaled anytime soon. Julien and his eight titles, the same as Daniel. Now Vincent is also a world champion. I also haven't forgotten Didier and Denis, who proved that a French crew could be world champions. In short, 19 titles to date, pure joy!

Why choose...? Two great champions who both deserve credit for proudly representing France! Including Auriol's title, that makes 19 WRC world championship titles—an unprecedented feat that will remain a record for a very long time—but almost no one has talked about it! F1 crushes everything in its path, and that's truly sad!

Honestly, Autohebdo, that's a question as stupid as the ones social media pundits would inevitably ask! There's no comparison, different eras, different cars, different competitors too (we often forget that), in short, two great champions, that's all, and that's perfect. Finally, you spared us the same old idiotic "of all time" which makes absolutely no sense...

I understand somewhat the reaction of the first comment on your question, which reflects the editorial style of our current press system. You published a comment from Ogier who answered this question. It seems to me that he essentially said that there could be no comparison between him and Loeb, just as there can be no comparison between Fangio and Verstappen, etc. History never repeats itself; circumstances are never the same. It's impossible to choose one athlete as the best of the rest, and in motorsport, as you know, the mechanical factor is paramount in a driver's victory. Best regards.

I thought you were journalists... but no, you're just one of those pathetic, forgetful people. For years we had no world-class drivers. Then came Didier Auriol, followed by two true champions, and the only question you can ask is this... I look at my paper copy of the weekly magazine that feeds you and ask myself: With journalists of this caliber, would this magazine have had even the slightest chance of being printed?
