It took a great Sébastien Ogier to prevent the i20s from scoring a double. The South Korean team still appeared united with a result which allowed them to take control of the Manufacturers' championship.

Before departure, despite the optimism displayed by Cyril Abiteboul, President of Hyundai Motorsport, the predictions did not give his team much luck. Toyota had four cars, the Yaris had already scored four consecutive successes in Portugal and there were for the first time this season the two crowned heads together, Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä. In front, Thierry Neuville had to open the road with the punishment that this implies, Ott Tänak had so far not convinced and Dani Sordo returned to earth after eight months of absence. This trio was nothing exciting, and yet, after three days of racing, Hyundai now leads both competitions.
