The Canary Islands Rally in the WRC until 2029

Having arrived on the Spanish island last year, the WRC will remain in the Canary Islands for a few more years. WRC Promoter, still in charge of the competition despite current plans to put it up for sale, and the organizers have reached an agreement to extend the event's presence until 2029, with an optional year that could therefore extend the agreement until 2030. "The signing of this multi-year contract represents an unprecedented achievement in the history of sport in the Canary Islands. Thanks to the support of all the institutions, the Rally “The Canary Islands Rally will consolidate itself in the coming years as a benchmark event in the WRC,” stated Germán Morales, president of the island event's organizing committee. Simon Larkin, WRC events director, added that “the Canary Islands Rally has had an immediate and very positive impact on the WRC since its inclusion in the calendar.”

The Canary Islands, Toyota's kingdom

Before joining the World Rally Championship, the Canary Islands Rally was an essential event in the...ERCWon several times, notably by Frenchman Yoann Bonato, it sparked diverse and varied reactions among rally fans last year. Indeed, the road profiles offered by the rally are often identical, and the on-track action was rather subdued. Kalle Ronvanperä, so to speak, obliterated the competition and Toyota had soundly beaten its rivals by placing four of its five cars in the top four positions in the final standings; only Sami Pajari was missing, having made a mistake. This year, the Canary Islands Rally will take place from April 23rd to 26th and will feature a new addition: a super special stage organized during the first leg on the former circuit that hosted the Race of Champions for over a decade. The event was popular and certainly drew large crowds to the island, and this is another reason why the organizers can be pleased with the conclusion of this new agreement.
