The fight for the FIA World Rally Championship title resumes this week on the iconic roads of Finland.
Thierry Neuville, the 2019 champion Ott Tänak and Elfyn Evans are the three main players in the race for the 2024 title. Neuville, a five-time runner-up, is ahead of his teammate Hyundai, Tänak, by eight points after eight rounds. Evans, who narrowly missed out on the title twice, sits five points further back.
Based around the town of Jyväskylä, the Rally of Finland is the fastest event on the calendar and a jewel in the crown of WRC with its smooth gravel roads, breathtaking jumps, blind turns that wind through forests and around lakes.
Tänak will be one of the favorites for victory, with three victories in Finland under his belt. But Evans has also proven himself in Scandinavia, winning the event in 2021 and 2023.
The Welsh will not be the only card of the Toyota Gazoo Racing which will also count on local hero and reigning world champion Kalle Rovanperä, as well as Sébastien Ogier, titled eight times. The Frenchman has not raced in Finland since 2021.
The Japanese brand, which bases its rally activities in Jyväskylä, will also field GR Yaris Rally1s for Takamoto Katsuta and Sami Pajari, the latter making his debut at the highest level of rallying with co-driver Enni Mälkönen at his side.
The competitors will have to face a new exercise this weekend, since on the Ouninpohja special, a virtual chicane will be installed to curb the pace.
