Before rally, Hyundai and you announced the extension of your collaboration for one year. Did this allow you to be more free for the race?

I was worried about the continuation of the program, but when I secured my contract, it reassured me and I am sure it was important for the whole team to know that we were continuing next year. It gave the team an extra boost and I think that with this hat-trick, it couldn't have come at a better time. It is also an ideal result for our management in Korea. They see that they made the right choice.

You haven't won since Monte Carlo. What are your feelings after your 2e success this year?

It's nice, but so far we've seized the opportunities that have presented themselves, especially with the Sunday attacks. Even though we sometimes already had good results in our pocket, we've put in the little push that has allowed us to go and get more points. With this scale, points are more important than a victory. I only look at the points and the rest is a bonus.

How do you explain that you have often had very good starts to the season and then experienced more complicated endings?

We have a car that performs well on all terrains, which has not always been the case in the past. This allows me to drive with fewer risks, while staying with the fastest. The only rally where we had problems this season was Finland, where the car was not on the pace and we did not feel confident. We have new engineers, the technical department has been restructured, we have a new director (Cyril Abiteboul. Ed.)… Ultimately, it makes for a good car, and knowing that the whole team is behind us is very motivating.

Did you know that Sébastien Ogier had gone off the road when you started the Power Stage?

No, I didn't get the info at first. I saw a car and two guys with helmets around it, but I didn't immediately think it was Seb... then I realized it was. I asked Martijn to confirm it, which he did.

Did this distract you?

Yes, a little bit, but the worst was reducing the speed. It was disturbing. Afterwards, I really drove slowly in some sections because it was sometimes very bumpy. We have to talk to the organizers to tell them that finishing the rally on such a special stage makes no sense.

You didn't fall into the trap of little phrases?

This has been going on for years. Let's not forget that I raced against Sébastien for ten years and he still narrowly won the championship five times over several seasons, so I know the person. It didn't upset me. I'm very happy with my life. I enjoy driving, and when I get home, life is very, very good. Why would I get upset?

Have you ever been in a better position to be champion?

No. We've been in a fight until the end of the season before, but this is the first time we've been this close with such a big lead.

How do you see the future?

It's basically a question of management. We have to stay focused on our work with the aim of winning the title.
