Involved in an accident during the first session on Friday in Canada, Red saw his steering wheel turn violently upon impact with the concrete wall. Immediately holding his right wrist upon exiting the car, the American knew he was injured, but he had to wait for the first scans and x-rays to learn that he had broken his thumb. Returned immediately to Indianapolis and replaced by Theo Pourchaire, the winner of the 500 Indy 2016 underwent surgery this Sunday morning at the Indianapolis hospital. An operation which went very well, as he explained on his social networks.
“Yesterday morning's operation on my thumb was a success. I would like to thank all the teams of theIndyCar and IU Methodist Hospital for their prompt work. I'm feeling good, and I'll give you more updates when I'm able. On the other hand, typing with my left hand is difficult”, he explained, with his usual little touch of deadpan humor! Rossi now has an extended convalescence period, since IndyCar will only return to the track on the weekend of August 17, on the Gateway oval. Until then, the Arrow pilot McLaren will focus on recovering from his injury and will be able to do it, like the rest of the field, by watching the Olympic Games on television!
An Update:
Yesterday morning's surgery on my thumb was successful. I am so grateful to everyone at Indycar medical and IU Methodist for the quick timeline. Feeling good and will share more news when able. Also, typing with my left hand is hard.
