Palou is one of the few drivers who did not try the soft tires provided this weekend at Firestone, which will be mandatory on ovals for the second time in history. He finished ahead of his teammate Scott Dixon. Colton Herta (Andretti) finished third, ahead of Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren) and another Andretti, that of Kyle Kirkwood.

The session, scheduled to last 1h15, was interrupted nearly 40 minutes after Nolan Siegel (Arrow McLaren) crashed in the first ten minutes of running. The young American lost control in turns 3 and 4, after going over a bump that had already caused some problems during the Indy NXT practice session a few minutes earlier. Siegel escaped unharmed, but the circuit teams had to spend a long time repairing the outside wall, damaged by the contact of the No. 6 machine.

Romain Grosjean (Juncos Hollinger Racing) finished the session in 21st place, ten places behind teammate Conor Daly. Felix Rosenqvist (Meyer Shank Racing) and Marcus Armstrong (Chip Ganassi Racing) both suffered problems during the session, Rosenqvist when a suspension part broke, and Armstrong suffered clutch problems throughout the first half of the session. Qualifying is scheduled to take place from 20:15pm, provided rain does not arrive by then, as clouds began to build towards the end of the session.
